With just a month remaining until the US elections, Homeland Security has issued an urgent warning, cautioning American citizens of an escalating security threat that could disrupt the most sacred pillar of democracy.

According to the annual US threat assessment, Homeland Security has seen a growing threat from Russia, Iran and China, who may make an attempt to influence the Nov. 5 elections by using artificial intelligence to spread fake information.

The DHS 2025 Homeland Threat Assessment report states Russian "influence actors" have spread stories about migrants entering the U.S. to stir up division. They’ve also used generative AI to create fake websites that look like real U.S. news outlets.

Meanwhile, Iran's bad actors are encouraging protests through online platforms over the conflict in Gaza, according to the report. As Americans are distracted from presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump clashing, the online manipulators could further disrupt the democratic process.

Warning about the attacks, the report states: “China, Russia, and Iran are expected to remain the most pressing foreign threats to our critical infrastructure.”

“Nation-states, criminal hacktivists, and financially motivated criminals will likely hone their techniques to disrupt U.S. services or to conduct espionage focused on gaining access to U.S. networks and critical infrastructure entities.”

Apart from critical infrastructure security, Homeland Security also warned about other security issues: economic security, border and immigration security, influence operations and transnational repression, illegal drugs, and public safety and security
