Trump team targets stricter chip controls to curb China’s tech rise

The Trump administration is gearing up to tighten semiconductor restrictions on China, building on the Biden administration’s efforts to stifle Beijing’s technological ambitions, according to Bloomberg.

The move signals a hardline stance aimed at keeping cutting-edge chip technology out of China’s hands.

According to the report, U.S. officials recently held talks with counterparts in Japan and the Netherlands to limit engineers from Tokyo Electron and ASML—key players in chip manufacturing equipment—from servicing semiconductor tools in China.

This would disrupt China’s ability to maintain and operate advanced chip-making systems.

Some Trump officials are also pushing to slash the volume and variety of Nvidia chips exportable to China without a license, further choking Beijing’s access to high-performance semiconductors critical for AI, military, and other advanced applications.

Trump’s broader strategy involves rallying allies like Japan and the Netherlands to mirror U.S. restrictions on American chip equipment giants such as Lam Research, KLA, and Applied Materials to hobble China’s semiconductor supply chain and slow its tech ascent.
