Ross Ulbricht, the mastermind behind the infamous darknet marketplace Silk Road, is now a free man after receiving a full presidential pardon from U.S. President Donald Trump.

The announcement, made on January 21 via Trump’s Truth Social platform, revealed the decision to release Ulbricht after he had served 12 years of a life sentence for his role in facilitating illegal online trade.

Trump described the pardon as a tribute to Ulbricht’s mother and the Libertarian movement, which had been vocal in advocating for Ulbricht's release. “In honor of her and the Libertarian Movement, which supported me so strongly, it was my pleasure to have just signed a full and unconditional pardon of her son, Ross,” Trump stated.
