Sony Block Solutions Labs, a joint venture with Startale Labs and the Sony Group, has recently launched an Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain, Soneium, that focuses on connecting the Web3 world with “everyday internet services.”

In the press release published on Aug. 23, Sony promised that the network will be made available to the public. They also mentioned that they will “create new services by leveraging the various businesses and IPs within the Sony Group so that Soneium becomes an infrastructure that everyone can use on a daily basis.”

Since Soneium is an Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain, Sony claims it will address the issues of slow processing speed and high fees.

Sony, as one of their first goals, claimed that they will be launching the Soneium testnet with Op Stack over the coming days. The testnet will allow developers and creators to experience the Soneium network and build their applications. Soneium will also join Optimism’s Superchain after the launch of the testnet.

Over the coming weeks, Sony will be releasing detailed technical documentation, developer tools, and SDKs

Commenting about Soneium’s launch, the Chairman of Sony Block Solutions, Jun Watanabe, claimed:

“We will work to create diverse businesses and new use cases with the aim of delivering customer value that can only be enjoyed through Web3 technology to as many users as possible and making people's lives richer and more colorful.”

Sony Block Solution Labs is also collaborating with multiple partners, such as Astar Network, to introduce Soneium. Furthermore, various other web3 companies, such as Alchemy, Chainlink, Circle, Optimism, and The Graph will collaborate with Sony as launch partners.
