Samsung Electronics has nominated two top chip executives, Jun Young-hyun and Song Jai-hyuk, to its board as the company intensifies efforts to regain ground in the semiconductor industry.
Jun, who heads Samsung's chip business, and Song, the firm’s Chief Technology Officer, are joined by Seoul National University professor Lee Hyuk-jae, an expert in semiconductor technology and head of the university’s semiconductor research centre, as an outside director nominee.
The appointments signal Samsung’s determination to bolster its semiconductor leadership, particularly after losing market share in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips—crucial for Nvidia’s AI graphics processing units—to rival SK Hynix.
The company has been pushing to restore its edge in the fiercely competitive chip sector, and the board shake-up reflects a clear focus on navigating industry challenges.
Samsung shareholders will vote on the new nominations at the company’s upcoming general meeting on March 19.
