OKX suspends DEX aggregator to block Lazarus group misuse

OKX has temporarily suspended its decentralized exchange (DEX) aggregator services following an attempted misuse by the North Korean-linked hacking group Lazarus.

In a public statement, OKX revealed that it had detected a coordinated effort by Lazarus Group to exploit its DeFi services. The company also noted an uptick in what it described as "competitive attacks" aimed at undermining its operations.

In response, OKX consulted with regulators before making the proactive decision to pause its DEX aggregator to implement additional safeguards.

OKX emphasized that it is taking a multi-pronged approach to mitigate risks and prevent future incidents. It has integrated a hacker address detection system into its Web3 DEX aggregator to identify and block illicit activity.

A real-time tracking system has also been introduced to monitor the latest hacker addresses and prevent their access to OKX’s centralized exchange (CEX) platform. Additionally, the company is working with blockchain explorers to ensure accurate trade labeling and prevent the misidentification of transactions.

The exchange also clarified its role in the ecosystem, stating that OKX Web3 operates as a DEX aggregator rather than a custodian of customer assets. The platform facilitates access to liquidity across multiple protocols, aiming to provide users with an efficient peer-to-peer trading experience.

OKX accused some industry players of deliberately misrepresenting its services to sow doubt within the crypto community. The company urged its users to recognize such efforts as attempts to mischaracterize its role and undermine broader discussions around regulation and industry integrity.

The temporary suspension of OKX’s DEX aggregator underscores the challenges DeFi platforms face in combating illicit activities while maintaining operational efficiency. The exchange reassured users that it would continue to strengthen security measures and provide updates on its progress.

"We will continue to innovate, protect our customers, and advocate for a more transparent and responsible digital asset space," OKX stated.
