Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has directed government officials to focus on the development of cryptocurrency mining in the country. Addressing newly appointed Minister of Energy Alexei Kushnarenko, Lukashenko emphasized the potential profitability of crypto mining, highlighting Belarus’ excess electricity as a key advantage.
"Look at mining. More and more people are turning to it. If it is profitable for us, let's do it. We have excess electricity, let's make cryptocurrency and so on. Moreover, you see the path the world is going,"
Lukashenko stated, according to BelTA.
The Belarusian leader also referenced the recent stance of the world’s largest economy on cryptocurrency, suggesting that global financial trends favor digital assets.
"They announced yesterday that they will keep cryptocurrency in reserve," he noted, indicating that crypto mining could become a strategic move for Belarus.
Lukashenko further proposed that the country could either attract investors by selling electricity for mining operations or establish state-run mining facilities. "Well, maybe we should do it ourselves, or we could attract some investors and sell them electricity. Although I do not rule it out, we need to do it ourselves. There are such proposals." he explained.
To accelerate the process, Lukashenko urged officials to bypass bureaucratic hurdles and quickly determine the necessary steps to implement cryptocurrency mining in Belarus. "I think that you will step over this bureaucracy and report what needs to be done," he added.
