A much-anticipated HBO documentary has stirred controversy by naming Bitcoin developer Peter Todd as the elusive Satoshi Nakamoto.
Producer Cullen Hobak claims he has conclusive evidence that Todd is the mastermind behind Bitcoin. In the documentary's final moments, Todd seemingly admits, "Well yeah, I'm Satoshi Nakamoto."
However, this isn't definitive proof. Todd has long supported the real creator's anonymity by humorously claiming, "I am Satoshi."
Even ahead of the documentary’s debut, he has consistently denied these claims, calling Hobak’s conclusions into question.
Following the airing of the documentary, Todd reiterated his denial on social media: "I am not Satoshi." He has used this phrase frequently in the past as a form of jest, including on the 2019 "What Bitcoin Did" podcast.
Todd detailed his first Bitcoin purchase in 2010, years after Bitcoin's white paper was released.
Hobak bases his assertion on a chat log where Todd discusses Bitcoin sacrifices, interpreting it as an indirect admission.
Todd, however, offers an alternate theory: maybe Satoshi chose anonymity to lend credibility to Bitcoin's creation.
