Golf enthusiasts witnessed a historic moment at the Crypto.com Showdown, held at the Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas on Tuesday night.
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy emerged victorious, taking home the top prize in one of the sport’s most innovative events.
The event was the first-ever televised face-off between representatives of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Scheffler and McIlroy represented the PGA Tour, while Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau played on behalf of the LIV Golf circuit, backed by Saudi investments.
What set this tournament apart wasn’t just the competition but the unique prize payout. The champions’ multimillion-dollar winnings — rumored to be around $10 million — will be awarded in cryptocurrency, a groundbreaking move in the world of sports.
In addition to the winners’ prize, each of the four participants reportedly earned $4 million simply for taking part.
The Crypto.com Showdown has set a new precedent in golf, blending traditional competition with modern financial innovation.
In a highly anticipated match on Tuesday night, Scheffler and McIlroy showcased their dominance, defeating DeChambeau and Koepka in convincing fashion.
Scheffler and McIlroy started strong in the four-ball match, with McIlroy leading the charge. Birdies on the first two holes by the Northern Irishman set the tone, while a stunning 40-foot eagle putt on the par-5 4th hole clinched a 3&2 victory in the opening match.
The foursomes match proved more competitive, but the PGA Tour pair held their nerve. After both teams missed early birdie opportunities, Scheffler’s precise wedge shot on the third hole shifted the momentum. Despite some back-and-forth moments, including a birdie from Koepka on the fifth hole, DeChambeau and Koepka’s inconsistency, including costly three-putts, handed Scheffler and McIlroy another point.
Heading into the singles matches with two points already secured, Scheffler and McIlroy needed only a tie to claim overall victory. McIlroy overpowered DeChambeau in their match-up, while Scheffler’s steady play overwhelmed Koepka, sealing the triumph for the PGA Tour team.
With their teamwork and consistency, Scheffler and McIlroy delivered a dominant performance, leaving little doubt about their superiority in this unique head-to-head event.
