The crowd-sourced fact-checking feature of Elon Musk's social media platform X, known as Community Notes, is reportedly failing to effectively counter false claims about the U.S. election, according to a report by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH).
The report analyzed 283 misleading posts and found that 209 of them, or 74%, did not display accurate notes to all X users, thereby failing to correct false and misleading election-related claims.
The CCDH report highlighted that these 209 misleading posts amassed a staggering 2.2 billion views, prompting the organization to urge X to invest more in safety and transparency measures.
X introduced the Community Notes feature last year, allowing users to comment on posts to flag false or misleading content, effectively crowd-sourcing fact-checking rather than relying on a dedicated team of fact-checkers.
This report follows a lawsuit that X lost earlier this year, which was brought by the CCDH.
The lawsuit accused X of allowing a rise in hate speech on the platform.
Social media platforms, including X, have been under scrutiny for years over the spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories, particularly concerning elections and vaccines.
In August, secretaries of state from five U.S. states urged Elon Musk to address issues with X's AI chatbot, which they claimed had spread misinformation related to the upcoming November 5 election.
Musk, who endorsed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in July, has himself been accused of spreading misinformation.
Current polls indicate that Trump is in a tight race with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
