The intense standoff between Elon Musk’s X and the Brazil Supreme Court has finally reached a resolution after the social media giant complied with the court's demands.
Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes announced the lifting of the ban on X after the company agreed to pay $5.1 million in fines and appoint a local representative as mandated by Brazilian law. In addition to these measures, X has also taken steps to block several accounts accused of spreading misinformation.
This clash began when Elon Musk refused to comply with the Brazilian government's orders to ban several profiles spreading false information about the 2022 Brazilian presidential election.
The subsequent ban on X led to a significant surge in Brazilian users resorting to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to circumvent the restrictions and access the blocked content. Additionally, some users migrated to alternative social media platforms like Bluesky.
Initially, Musk showed no inclination to heed Brazil’s directives, making the recent compliance by X an unexpected turn of events.
With X now meeting the court's requirements, Brazilians will once again be able to access and use the social media platform without the need for workarounds.
